Reasons for Lumbar Surgery
At the DFW Laser Spine Institute, we know that living life in chronic pain can be draining. You may be a candidate for minimally invasive lumbar surgery such as lumbar decompression, lumbar discectomy or lumbar fusion if you have been diagnosed with degenerative disc disease, a bulging disc, or a herniated disc, or if you experience persistent symptoms such as:1,2
- Inability to move without pain
- Inability to stand up straight
- Stiffness in your low back area
- Weakness, tingling or numbness in one or both legs
- Muscle spasms
- Problems controlling the way you move
Lumbar Decompression
A lumbar decompression, also called a laminectomy, is a minimally invasive surgery that involves removing bony overgrowths within your spinal canal that are putting pressure on nerves and causing pain.3,4 These growths, called bone spurs, are sometimes a normal result of aging.3 Removing them opens up your spinal canal and relieves nerve pressure.3,4
Lumbar Discectomy
The discs in your spine are like elastic rings that act as a cushion between your vertebrae, which are the bones in your spinal column. If a disc gets weak, some of the soft tissue can herniate and protrude outside the disc, causing pain. In a lumbar discectomy, your DFW Laser Spine Institute surgeon uses minimally invasive techniques to remove the herniated part of your disc to relieve nerve irritation and pain.1,5
Lumbar Fusion
A lumbar fusion, also called a spinal fusion, is a minimally invasive procedure to permanently connect two or more bones in your spine.1 It can be done to eliminate painful friction that can happen from a herniated disc, or to help make your spine more stable if it has been fractured.4 Although lumbar fusion takes away some of your flexibility, most fusions involve only small areas and don’t limit your motion very much.4
