What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder known for causing widespread pain, sleep disturbances, fatigue, and often emotional and mental distress.3 The exact cause of fibromyalgia is unknown, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, environmental, and psychological factors. Individuals with fibromyalgia often have an increased sensitivity to pain, known as abnormal pain perception processing. Symptoms can vary in intensity and may flare up or subside periodically.
Fibromyalgia is a type of Central Sensitization Disorder, which are a collection of illnesses where the central nervous system misfires and amplifies sensory input resulting in pain, fatigue, brain fog, and sleep problems. Fibromyalgia (FMS), irritable bowel (IBS) chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), interstitial cystitis (IC), and chronic migraine, are some examples of these syndromes. They are thought to be a result of the interactions between the nervous system, hormonal influences, and immune system and are related to individual genetics, trauma, infections, toxins, diet, and stress.
Diagnosing Fibromyalgia
Diagnosing fibromyalgia can be challenging as its symptoms overlap with many other conditions. Our pain management specialist at DFW Spine Institute uses a comprehensive approach to ensure an accurate diagnosis. This typically involves:
- Medical History and Symptom Review: Detailed discussions about symptoms, their duration, and their impact on daily life.
- Physical Examination: Assessment of tender points and evaluation of overall physical health.
- Exclusion of Other Conditions: Blood tests and other diagnostic tests to rule out conditions with similar symptoms, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis.
- Diagnostic Criteria: The diagnosis is based on the widespread pain index (WPI) and symptom severity scale (SSS) as outlined by the American College of Rheumatology.
